John and Abigail Adams certainly knew them both. Neither is mentioned in the other biography, and they would not have ever met (neither ever crossed the Atlantic), but they would have known about each other. (But she died of natural causes rather than being shot by the vice-president of the United States.)īoth dominated their respective political landscapes without ever reaching the top - Georgiana couldn't as a woman, and Hamilton couldn't because he kept annoying people too much. He was born in 1755 or 1757, and she was definitely born in 1757. Hamilton and the Duchess were almost exact contemporaries. Both have been successfully adapted as fiction - the super-famous musical Hamilton, and the 2008 film The Duchess starring Keira Knightley.

Two of the best biographies I have read in recent years are Ron Chernow on Alexander Hamilton ( ) and Amanda Foreman on Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire ( ). Alexander Hamilton and Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire
