The main character, Harriet Cleve Dufresnes, is twelve years old, and she lives with her mother and her sister, Allison. The Little Friend begins in 1970s Mississippi. Some have criticized the book for not giving a clear ending. She was first published in the Mississippi Literary Review at thirteen, and she’s been writing ever since.

Tartt most recently won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel, The Goldfinch. The book, like Tartt’s debut, received widespread critical acclaim and won the 2003 WH Smith Literary Award. First published in 2002, it tells the story of a young girl determined to find out who killed her brother many years ago, and the complex family problems she uncovers as a result.
