The two main characters are instantly attractive as people to invest your time and emotional energy in. Yes, the scenario is ridiculous, but it totally works for this book. The author is so skilled in the way she structures the narrative and develops the characters that I never for a second didn’t feel like their behaviour and reactions were authentic. How on earth can anyone make this plot work so that the reader believes it could happen? Well, pick up One Night on the Island and you will find out because I, middle-aged, divorced old cynic that I am, completely bought into it right from the beginning. The premise of the book sounds ludicrous. I’m going to run out of superlatives before I finish describing this novel. Oh my god, the relationship is just everything you could want in a romance. If I could magically wish my perfect book into being, it would fall in to my lap in the shape of this book. This book made me feel EXACTLY how Schitt’s Creek made me feel when I watched it and anyone who knows how great my love for Schitt’s Creek is will know this is about as high as praise can get from me. Not sure I’ve ever felt so strongly about a book that I had to kick off my review with a Schitt’s Creek gif before, but One Night on the Island definitely warranted it.
